With the term “peri” meaning around, and “odontal” pertaining to teeth, periodontal disease refers to the infection of all the structures surrounding the teeth. It can be in the gums, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and the covering of the root called cementum. Gingivitis is the earliest stage of this disease. Initial signs include bleeding and swollen gums.
The culprit behind this disease is bacteria in the plaque. A sticky substance, plaque builds up on your teeth between brushing. When there’s too much bacteria in your mouth, your immune system sends substances to defeat bacteria.
